About Us

Our Story

In 2015, Day of the Dogs founder Pam Siedler began working as a weekly volunteer with the Harris County Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas.

When she learned of the shelter’s low live release rate, Pam began looking for ways to give the animals – and the shelter – greater exposure and to increase awareness of the capacity crisis facing HCAS. Pam started the Harris County Animal Shelter Pets in Need Facebook page with the goal to raise funds for urgent animal cases and bring much-needed attention to HCAS.

Day of the Dogs was established in September 2016 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Since the beginning, our mission has been to increase the live release rate of shelter animals through rescue and adoption support. We’re committed to saving homeless animals through multiple initiatives:

  • Showcasing animals in need at HCAS on our Facebook page
  • Collecting and distributing donations to cover the costs of care rescues incur, including veterinary care, boarding, food and supplies and transport
  • Owner-surrender prevention
  • Adoption Showcase events
  • Connecting local and out-of-state rescues and adopters to foster homes in Houston
  • Transporting homeless animals to vetted rescue partners and no-kill shelters in other states
